ACT Anaheim Announces $1.5 Million in Inaugural Grants; Funds Will Support 10 Nonprofits to Help At-Risk Anaheim Youth
Accelerate Change Together for Anaheim (ACT Anaheim), announced today that it is awarding $1.5 million in inaugural grants ranging from $100,000 to $200,000 to 10 local nonprofits to address gaps in services for underserved Anaheim youth.
ACT Anaheim was launched by Angels Baseball, the Anaheim Ducks and Disneyland Resort, which together committed $3 million to benefit Anaheim youth over the next three years. The Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) joined as managing partner of the grant initiative, increasing the inaugural granting pool from $1 million to $1.5 million.
“This grant initiative marks the beginning of a new era of strategic, collaborative efforts to better serve the youth and families of Anaheim, with leaders from business, the community and local nonprofits jointly committed to the city’s healthy future,” said Shelley Hoss, president of the Orange County Community Foundation. “It is time to mobilize for responsiveness and cast an even wider net of local businesses and individuals impassioned as a community to address the challenges facing Anaheim youth.”
The inaugural ACT grantees were selected based on their ability to address the specific needs outlined in the 2012 Anaheim Youth Services Assessment, including engaging youth and parents, focusing on prevention as well as intervention, and fostering safe communities. Funded programs will work specifically to:
- Enhance programming geared to older youth (primarily ages 13 – 18)
- Increase access to youth programming
- Engage parents in meaningful ways to strengthen families
- Increase the capacity of programs to meet the needs of Anaheim youth and families
First-Year Grant Pool Grows by 50 Percent
Under the leadership of the OCCF, the grant pool has exceeded the $1 million anticipated for the first year. The Walt Disney Company added $200,000 to its original commitment and OCCF has added $300,000 from its discretionary funds and circle of donors, including the Ueberroth Family Foundation, the Swayne Family Foundation, Donnie Crevier and the Tarsadia Foundation.
“We were inspired by the leadership the ACT Anaheim collaboration has demonstrated for this place-based initiative," said Vicki Booth, president of the Ueberroth Family Foundation. "We are investing not just in a city but in the future of youth in our community, and we look forward to seeing the impact these innovative grant programs will yield.”
Statement on behalf of Disneyland Resort, Anaheim Ducks and Angels Baseball: “As founding partners, we are thrilled with the interest ACT Anaheim has generated and we hope to build on this momentum with others joining us in funding future grants. We are confident in our targeted approach and optimistic about tangible outcomes.”
