It will distribute ten new scholarships each year for 20 years to students pursuing an undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College or The University of Toledo. The scholarship is renewable for one additional year.

“I can’t think of a better way to give back to the Toledo community than to help these deserving students afford college,” said Bill Block, Jr.

Application for the Mr. and Mrs. William Block, Jr. Scholarship of the Toledo Community Foundation can be made online via the Foundation’s website between November 1 and February 1. Eligible applicants must plan to be full-time college students at one of the four qualifying colleges. The Scholarship Advisory Committee that reviews applications will consider grade point average as well as community involvement, such as volunteer experiences and/or paid employment, and need for financial assistance in order to continue education.

Mr. Block is a board member of Block Communications, Inc. (BCI) and its executive committee. BCI is the parent company of The Blade. He previously served as chairman of BCI, and before that as its president. He was co-publisher of The Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1990-2001.
